Spain, the first country in European football history with 5 teams in semifinals!
The Iberian football has dominate The Old Continent since 2000. As a testimony in this regard are the trophies won by Real Madrid in 1999 and 2001, and hegemony installed by FC Barcelona from 2006 until now. Sevilla and Atletico Madrid have completed the picture of Spanish successes in the second competition in Europe, Europa League.
This season is no exception and Spain attacked two trophies with a total of five teams. Barcelona and Real Madrid are heading for a dream final of the Champions League, and in Eura League at least one of the finalists in Bucharest will be Cervantes’ country.
Valencia and Atletico Madrid will meet in a direct clash for a “ticket” on National Arena, while the second finalist will be decided between Athletic Bilbao and Sporting Lisbon.
The present situation is not unique in European football landscape. There is a precedent, when a nation was represented by five teams in European Cup semifinals.
It happens in 1979/1980 season when West Germany monopolized the UEFA Cup semifinals with Bayern Munich, Eintracht Frankfurt, VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Monchengladbach.
The trophy was won by Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to goals scored away to Borussia Monchengladbach. It was 1-0 for Entracht at home and 2-3 away.
The fifth German team, Hamburg, played the European Cup final with Nottingham Forest, and lost the final, score 0-1 on Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid.
A similar situation occurred in 2002-2003, when AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan reached to Champions League semifinals while Lazio playing for UEFA Cup.
